It is presence, it is everyday life. It is conversation. It is shared bread and shared life.

The Coffee Cup – Our Encounters

After the crucifixion, two disciples are on their way away from Jerusalem. They are disappointed and wounded. Jesus walks with them without their recognizing him. He listens. He speaks with them. And then something happens at the table:

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and gave it to them.

Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him.

(Luke 24:30–31)

It is in the meal that eyes are opened.

But the table is also open to all, which we see in Zacchaeus.

“Hurry and come down, Zacchaeus, for today I must stay at your house.”

(Luke 19:5)

And the reaction is:

“He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

(Luke 19:7)

Jesus does not begin by preaching from a distance.

He begins by sitting down.

The first Christian community lived in the same way:

Every day they continued faithfully and with one accord in the temple, and in their homes they broke bread and shared meals together with joyful and sincere hearts.

(Acts 2:46)

The temple and the home.

The worship service and the kitchen table.

The coffee cup therefore stands for our encounters. For conversation. For the place where faith can be shared without being finished.

Meet them where they are

as Jesus met the disciples on the road to Emmaus.

Meet them at eye level

as Jesus met the woman at the well.

A Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”

(John 4:7)

Meet them with respect

as Jesus met Zacchaeus.

That is the posture of the coffee cup.

Presence before argument.

Relationship before position.

The Heart – The Father

Behind the cup is the heart.

It reminds us of the Father – the source of love, the one who sends, the one who loves first.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

(John 3:16)

Everything begins in love.

It is not humanity’s longing that first reaches God.

It is God’s love that first reaches humanity.

The Cross – The Son

At the center of the heart is the cross.

It is Christ himself. The crucified and risen one. The one who breaks bread in Emmaus. The one who goes home with Zacchaeus. The one who gives his life.

But God demonstrates his love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

(Romans 5:8)

The cross is the center.

Not as a symbol of morality, but as a sign of grace.

The Steam – The Spirit

Above the cup the steam rises.

It cannot be contained. It moves.

Jesus says:

The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.

(John 3:8)

The Spirit is not something we possess.

It blows.

It is the Spirit who makes conversation more than words.

Who makes the meal more than bread.

Who makes community alive.

The Trinity – Love at the Center

The theology of the coffee cup holds the Trinity.

The Father – the source of love.

The Son – the cross at the center.

The Spirit – the wind that gives life.

Grace.

Love.

Fellowship.

And therefore:

We meet people where they are,

because God first met us.

We love because he first loved us.

(1 John 4:19)

There is room at the table.

Möt dem där de är...

Som Jesus mötte lärjungarna.

Daniel Jansson Brask

Kaffekoppens teologi, del 1

Möt dem där de är

(English version below)

English version

Coffee Cup Theology, Part 1

Meet Them Where They Are

“Why don’t they come when I ring?”
A classic Swedish monologue from one of our great comedians Hasse Alfredsson.

Yes, why don’t they come?

We ring the church bells before services, weekday Masses, funerals, weddings and baptisms. We ring them several times. But they are no longer a call that makes people come. They have become a ritual for those who are already initiated, or already present.

But being out in town wearing a clerical collar, carrying a Christian symbol, holding a Bible, that creates conversations. That creates encounters.

Many years ago I was part of a group of priests, pastors and youth leaders who met at a pub. We sat down and ordered whatever we wanted to drink. Beer, soda, water. Nothing was wrong, nothing was right.

When we received our drinks, we all took out our Bibles.

People around us often reacted. They wondered what kind of strange people we were. We began discussing the Bible, but rarely did we get more than a few sentences in before someone approached us. Someone wanted to ask questions. Someone wanted to talk privately. Someone shared their view of Christianity and the church.

We met them where they were.

They did not have to come to us. We came to them.

Some we only saw once. Others came back several times. A few even chose to come to church. Not because we were evangelizing, but because we listened. We met them where they were, not where we thought they should be.

Meeting a person where we think they ought to be never works. This applies both to how far someone has come in faith and to things we believe they are doing wrong.

It is not our role to judge.

When Jesus met Peter, the first thing he said was not, “You are a sinner.”
He said, “Follow me.”

He met Simon, as he was called then, where he was. As he was.

That is why the first part of coffee cup theology is simple:

Meet them where they are.

There is room.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Gudstjänst på In short,

To meet people where they are, as Jesus met the disciples.
To meet people at eye level, as Jesus met the woman at the well.
To meet people with respect, as Jesus met
